Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 2 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup sourdough starter

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast:
In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Let it sit for about 5 minutes

  • Mix the Dough:
Add the sourdough starter, olive oil, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour, one cup at a time, until the dough forms. You may need to use your hands to knead it a little. Continue kneading for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Let It Rise:
Once your dough is ready, shape it into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size

  • Shape the Bowls:
After the dough has risen, gently punch it down and divide it into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a round ball. Place the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, keeping them a few inches apart. Bake the Sourdough Bowls: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the dough balls for about 25-30 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom. Remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes.
  • Create the Bowls:
Once the sourdough bread is cool enough to handle, use a serrated knife to carefully cut a large "lid" from the top of each round. Then, gently hollow out the inside of each bread ball, leaving about an inch of the crust intact. Your bread bowls are now ready for soup!
