Ingredients

  • 4 slices of sourdough bread (preferably a day or two old)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup of milk (or your choice of non-dairy milk)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • A pinch of salt
  • Butter or oil for cooking
  • Optional toppings: Maple syrup, fresh fruit (berries, bananas, etc.), powdered sugar, nuts, or whipped cream

Instructions

  • Prepare the EggMixture
In amedium-sized mixing bowl, crack the 2 large eggs and whisk them until the yolksand whites are fully combined. Next, add in the 1 cup of milk, 1 teaspoon ofvanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. If you’re using ground cinnamon, add thatas well. Whisk the mixture together until it is smooth and well blended. Theeggs provide the base for your custard, while the milk adds creaminess.
  • Soak theSourdough Bread
Now it’s time tosoak your sourdough bread. Take your 4 slices of sourdough bread and dip eachslice into the egg mixture. Make sure to coat both sides of the bread thoroughly. Allow the slices to soak for approximately 30 seconds to one minute, giving the bread time to absorb the custard without getting overly soggy. Thisstep is crucial for achieving the perfect texture in your sourdough Frenchtoast.
  • Heat the Skillet
While your breadis soaking, place a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Add atablespoon of butter or oil to the pan, allowing it to melt and coat the bottomevenly. You want the skillet to be hot enough that the bread sizzles when ithits the surface, creating a nice crispy crust.
  • Cook the FrenchToast
Once yourskillet is hot, carefully place the soaked sourdough bread slices into the pan.Don’t overcrowd the skillet; if necessary, cook in batches to ensure evencooking. Allow the bread to cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or untilit is golden brown and crispy. The longer you cook it, the crispier it willget, but be sure not to burn it!
